Introduction to Toolbox

WARPs can deliver more effective and lower cost security by providing members with:

  • A trusted environment
  • Security information filtering
  • Access to expert advice
  • Early warning of threats
  • Strategic decision support
  • Improved awareness

The WARP Toolbox supports the development and provision of the 3 three WARP services, which, between them, can deliver all the benefits listed above. Experience suggests that phasing delivery of the three services in the order shown below progressively encourages and develops the online trust necessary for a successful WARP:

WARP Development Model

  • STAGE 1 Filtered Warning Service - where members receive only the security information relevant to their needs as determined by categories selected by the member. These categories, for example, cover Warnings & Advisories associated with Vulnerabilities & Fixes; Threats & Incidents and Good Practice. This is typically perceived as a personalised, risk free and valuable service which enhances the sense of “community”;

  • STAGE 2 Advice Brokering Service - where members can learn from other members initiatives & experience using a bulletin board messaging service or face to face meetings restricted to WARP members only. Subjects can be anything which adds value to the members eg patch management; training; supplier/product evaluations, security awareness. Such a service builds on the sense of community encouraged in stage one ;

  • STAGE 3 Trusted Sharing Service - where reports are anonymised so members can learn from each other’s attacks & incidents without fear of embarrassment or recrimination. This stage is facilitated by the sense of community and the levels of trust brought about by stages 1 and 2.

Next step - Business case will start you on the process of building a business case by helping you identify the community, benefits, costs and funding.
