WARP Annual Forum presentations 2008

The forum was opened by Desmond Hudson, CEO of the Law Society, who started by describing the security needs of his 100,000 plus members . He highlighted the move to e-conveyancing, on-line Legal Aid and e-document management. He described how important the WARP model was in helping to deliver the necessary security to protect the reputation of the legal profession and, what is, a valuable national asset (estimated at 2% UK GDP).

This was followed by the Director CPNI. The Director's presentation concentrated on the integration of physical, personnel and electronic security and other future development with respect to WARPs - the main points were:

  • Establishment of WARP Trust increases independence of WARP programme;
  • Establishment of WARP MSP will help to overcome financial and practical hurdles;
  • Integrated, holistic approach to security is to be encouraged but cannot be imposed. Experts should stay within their individual fields but must be more familiar with others’ and able to cooperate with each other more.

The Annual WARP Forum was introduced by the WARP Programme Director from CPNI (Peter B), who closed the proceedings with a reflection on the developmental maturity of WARPs. He likened the WARP programme to a child about to leave home. This illustrated his paternal feeling for his brain-child, and the conflict of emotions that come about when 'letting-go' and seeing that offspring about to make its way in the world. This metaphor reflected the development of the WARP Trust which will see WARPs become more independent, and the wealth of 'career' directions opening up to WARPs. CPNI will continue to keep a fatherly eye on developments of course, and may be persuaded to help out with shortages of funds, but the WARP programme was now ready to make its own way, and this sponsored conference was a great start.
